A personalized creation can turn an ordinary photo into an object that you keep close by for years. But the final result depends a lot on the starting image. Good news: you don't need to be a photographer. A few simple checks are enough to choose a photo that will truly highlight your memory.
1. Prioritize a sharp photo
Sharpness is the first criterion to check. Zoom in slightly on the face, animal, or main subject. If the eyes, contours, and small details remain visible, the base is generally good. A very blurry photo does not magically become precise when enlarged—even our grimoire has its limits.
When you are hesitating between several images, choose the one where the subject is clearest rather than the one with the most spectacular background. The background can often be adapted; a blurry face, much less so.
2. Send the original file
Photos saved from a conversation, a screenshot, or a social network are often compressed. They may look good on a phone but lose detail once printed on a poster, clock, or lamp.
The best choice is the original file from the phone or camera. If you no longer have it, send the largest version available. Avoid cropping or adding filters before sending: this leaves more freedom to prepare the creation.
3. Choose lighting that is kind to faces
Natural, even light generally produces a better result. Photos taken near a window or outdoors, without harsh sunlight, preserve colors and details better.
Beware of very dark images, faces completely backlit, and overexposed areas that are almost white. We can improve an image, but we cannot faithfully recreate details that are no longer there.
4. Leave some space around the subject
Products do not all have the same shape. A metal poster is rectangular, a clock is round, and an LED photo lamp measures 6 × 8 inches. A photo that is too tightly cropped around the face or ears can be difficult to adapt without cutting off an important part.
An image with a bit of space around the subject offers more framing possibilities. If your favorite photo is a close-up, send it anyway with one or two additional options.
5. For multiple people or animals, check the composition
If the creation is to feature several people or animals, choose a photo where all faces are large enough and well-lit. The further away the subjects are, the smaller they will appear on the final product.
You do not necessarily need a single group photo. Depending on the project, several individual images can be used to create a cohesive montage. The important thing is to provide photos that have comparable quality and lighting.

There is still some space left around the subject to allow for framing.
Important elements are not already cut off.
I have kept one or two replacement photos in case of doubt.
